Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh celebrates local female sporting talent

Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh has celebrated the latest winners of the prestigious Sports Personality of the Month Award. The winners were selected for December 2022 and January 2023 highlighting the wealth of sporting talent in the council area.

Sponsored by Decathlon, the award recognises the achievements and dedication of sporting stars in the Lisburn & Castlereagh area. The winners are selected each month by the Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh Committee and a £100 voucher is awarded to each successful winner.

Sports Personality winner for December was female archer, Molly McCormick who represented Northern Ireland and Lisburn City Archery Club at the National Indoor Championships back in December 2022. The talented archer finished 33rd in the Recurve Women’s category and set a new U21 Northern Ireland record of 521 in the process. Molly has broken five NI records throughout the 2022/23 season.

U14 Ulster and National Cyclocross Champion, Emer Heverin was the January Sports Personality winner. Emer had a fantastic season over the winter months winning triple titles, including the Ulster Cyclocross League, Ulster Cyclocross Championship and the World Cup Support Race. Success has continued into the 2023 season with Emer winning the esteemed Irish Cyclocross Championships in January for her age category.  

Treasurer of Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh, Adrian Daye said, “Both female athletes have experienced a fantastic season in their chosen sport. Molly’s achievement in archery has been outstanding. She has proudly represented her country at competition level, smashing not one but five NI records on her way.

“Emer has picked up an accolade of trophies throughout the season which demonstrated her commitment and drive to reach the pinnacle of Cyclocross. She has dominated the sport in her age category with her amazing achievement in the Cyclocross Championship.

“I hope these two amazing athletes will inspire other clubs or families to make a nomination and showcase the breadth of sporting talent we have in Lisburn & Castlereagh.”
